Orchard Street
A prestigious development of 4 bespoke houses in the Arts & Crafts Style in Chichester
Conversion of former workhouse & outbuildings to provide 32 units of mixed tenure affordable housing in an historic setting.
Kingsway House was constructed in 1837 as a workhouse and when this use declined it subsequently became a furniture warehouse. The building was proving difficult to maintain and, therefore, didn’t meet the extensive levels required as a place of employment. The owner was introduced by the practice to a local Housing Association and a feasibility scheme developed to demonstrate the viability of the a change of use to residential.
The practice worked closely with the Local Authority Conservation Officer to produce a sympathetic scheme. The bespoke layout of each unit ensured the historic elements of the listed building were incorporated in functional & aesthetic ways. The outcome of the extensive consultation with the Conservation Officer ensured the heritage of the scheme shone through whilst delivering practical homes for the residents.
The design solution is sympathetic and respects the architectural heritage of the site and provides good quality affordable housing making excellent use of existing Grade II listed buildings and ensuring their long term viability.
People are at the centre of everything we do, we foster and nurture a creative and innovative environment in which all excel.
The scheme received a Commendation Award from Salisbury Civic Society as the design utilised existing features of the building.
